Happy New Year!

All of us here at Rescue Me would like to wish you a very, very Happy New Year, filled with peace, happiness, love, friendships, family, freedom and, of course, a nice full tummy!

We found this wonderful card from annemade.com and thought it expressed perfectly our sentiments on this New Year's Eve! See all of their wonderful cards, all printed on recycled paper.

We'll leave this year, 2007 with a video Mum and I put together showcasing many of the pups we featured on our blog this year. We hope you enjoy and share this video with anyone and everyone you think would be able to get the word out, so that these pups, and others just like them, in shelters and rescues through the US, can find their forever homes.

Meet Eve!

Eve is approximately 1 to 1 1/2 years old. She was a stray rescued from the shelter. She delivered 9 puppies 2 days after leaving the shelter. She is an excellent mother. She is a very friendly dog, gets along well with other dogs and cats. She has been spayed, is heartworm negative and on preventive.

She loves to go on walks and is a very strong swimmer. Eve will sit on command and is learning some other basic obedience. She does well in the house and hasn't had any accidents. We are working on crate training. Eve will make an excellent addition to any family.

We found Eve currently being cared for by the East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue in Oliver Springs, Tennessee. Their goals are to rescue and rehabilitate Border Collies that have been abused, abandoned, neglected, or placed in a situation where it is no longer appropriate that they stay in their present home. And to find loving, permanent, and appropriate homes for these dogs, ensuring that the right match is made and our rescued Border Collies will have a second chance at a loving family for life.

And I'm sure that if you have it in your heart to donate, Eve and the others at East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue would love a donation of dog supplies.

Meet Chill!

Chill, along with his 5 siblings, are well socialized Rottweiler/Shepherd mixes. These puppies were from an unexpected litter. Their owner cared very much for them and wanted help finding them loving homes, so they came to WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue for medical attention and rehoming.

We found Chill currently being cared for by WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue in Solway, Minnisota. WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue is celebrating it's 17th year of operation in 2007! They are the only animal welfare organization in the northern part of the state that is able to work with all species of animals. Animals accepted into the rescue are treated like they were their own pets until they place them into a new home. They work with livestock, horses, small caged animals and more, and rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of animals each year. They are a volunteer based organization and rely on donations and adoption fees to keep the rescue going.

Meet Weather!

Three year old Weather, came from a puppymill. He is a beautiful boy. Weather is shy but warming up quickly and learning about housebreaking. Weather's left eye is much smaller than his right. His vet says it is functional though. Weather has been neutered and his shots are up to date.

We found Weather currently being cared for by All Rovers Rescue Friends (ARRF) in Toledo, Ohio. They are a non-profit 501c3 organization completely run by dedicated volunteers. We accept dogs from shelters and owner releases for placement to be re-homed as companion animals. We are not breed or age specific, but do our best to find temperamentally sound dogs that will become full family members.

He is HW positive and is on preventative. He is altered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is a very special guy. He is smart and very loyal. He will be a great addition to any family that has a little extra time to spend with him.

Meet Snow!

Snow is a real pretty young Jindo mix girl who is being left out in the cold with no shelter. She lives a very isolated life and needs someone who will socialize her into a home & family environment. She came as a stray and has not learned about love and comfort. She is plenty young, weighs around 45 pounds, and her neighbor is contact.

We found Snow currently being cared for by A Passion for Paws in La Jolla, California. They are a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit dedicated to saving the lives of Akitas and other large breeds that have lost hope of finding a new home while awaiting death. They are a 100% NO KILL rescue organization that survives entirely on donations.

Meet Winter!

This is Winter. She's a friendly Husky mix girl looking for a new home, preferably with a fenced yard, because my former owners didn't appreciate the needs of an active young dog. She's clean in her crate, so she'll probably catch on to housebreaking quite easily.

We found Winter currently being cared for by the SPCA of Northern Virginia. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Northern Virginia is a non-profit, all-volunteer, private organization established by local concerned citizens to rescue domestic animals from cruelty, neglect and abandonment. They receive all our funding from membership dues, donations, and fund-raising events and are always striving to enlarge our animal rescue operations and expand their services to the community.

Have you thought about insurance for your pup? With the rising costs of healthcare for us pups, it's always a good thing to be prepared for any emergency. I've had health insurance since I was four months old, and I have to tell you it's really paid off.

There are all types of health insurance companies for pups, the one we found that we really liked was QuickCare. Why? Because they don't exclude for breed specific health conditions like a lot of other companies.

Just like life insurance quotes for two-leggers, looking into health insurance for your pup could be a saving grace.

We got an award!

Our new friends over at The Dog Log, presented us the other day with a wonderful new award - The community Blogger Award.

The creators of the award tell us...

"The Community Blogger Award recognizes bloggers that celebrate those who reach out and make the blogger community a better one. It also underlines the importance of a blog's readership community, one of the most rewarding parts about blogging. It's those who come back to comment, adding to the conversation, making you feel like someone is listening and interested."

Thanks so much Dog Log, we most certainly appreciate this award! Now I'd like to present this award to my Mum, 'cause she is my secretary, my inspiration, my best friend and with a little Miracle burn, she'd be svelte too!

Meet Elf!

This is Elf and he is a nine month old golden retriever, cocker spaniel mix. He is such a sweet, submissive, and friendly dog. He really loves to play and gets along really well with others. He likes to go on walks and give you kisses on the cheek.

We found Elf currently being cared for by Project Pet in Columbia, South Carolina. Project Pet is a 501(c)(3) community-based, people/pet project founded by volunteers from four local animal welfare organizations who have joined together to humanely reduce pet overpopulation in the Midlands through innovative, pro-active programs.

Meet Noel!

Noel, and Italian Greyhound, is a sweet gal with a lot of love to give the right family. She was born with severely luxated patellas and a lowered lung capacity. She gets around great on her wheelchair. She is a true blessing and a joy. Her tremendous spirit will enrich your life.

We found Noel currently being cared for by Southern Ohio Sighthound Rescue in Jackson, Ohio. They are a private rescue group with the sole purpose to find homes for unwanted animals. These animals are either owner surrendered or strays. Originally, they started off as a sighthound rescue, but have quickly become an all breed, cat and dog rescue.

Each animal is evaluated so that it can be placed in a home suitable to both the dog/cat and new owners. All animals are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations.

A Rescue Dog's Christmas Poem!

A Rescue Dog's Christmas Poem

Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost, but not found,

Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,

They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!

But now we sit here and think of the days...
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?

We "jump on the children:, "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.

We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.

If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse -let to roam-
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.

They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."

So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,

They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer...
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads...
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears -
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn -
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?

We count on your kindness each day of the year -
can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Please make a donation to pay for the heat...
and help get us something special to eat.

The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people will give.

Oh he's a cutie curly guy! If you're looking for a little one with poodle curls and lots of sweetness, he's your guy. Frosty is a Poodle, Maltese mix. He can be shy sometimes in the kennels due to all the noise and hustle and bustle, but if he's out in the yards, he's really playful.

Meet Kris Kringle!

Kris Kringle is an adult Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland Mix. We found Kris at the Wisconsin Humane Society.

Founded in 1879, the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is a private nonprofit organization that is funded through the generosity of individual donors and receives no government support. As the largest and most recognized shelter in the State of Wisconsin, WHS offers specialized adoption services to match homeless companion animals with new families and provide follow up and support.

WHS receives animals from the community, the local animal control facility and other shelters inundated with animals. WHS also provides medical care for nearly 20,000 animals annually. Some of those animals are patients in our clinic and more than 5,000 are wild animals in need of rehabilitation. WHS maintains a spay/neuter clinic for animals from low-income households and provides education for children and adults to respect and care for animals and to end neglect and abuse. WHS also offers manners and puppy classes for dogs from the public.

The WHS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is one of the largest in the nation. WHS merged with the Ozaukee Humane Society in 2004 to more effectively meet the needs of animals. Both the organizations remain focused on a shared mission and service to animals and people in their community.

He is crate trained, potty trained and has basic house manners...sometimes, you have to tell him twice! He is a great boy, but is scared of cats! He enjoys other dogs his size. He loves older children, and would prefer a home with kids. If you give him a stuffy, you'll be his friend for life! If you'd like a friend to play, snuggle and chat with, Nick would be your guy!

Meet Rudolph!

Here he is, big enough to pull a small sleigh, and his name is Rudolph.

Rudolph is a fine purebred Chocolate Lab. Don't be fooled by his sad compelling eyes, he knows how to have fun - 2+ years is just the right age for being settled, mellow with knowledge of a few commands under his belt. He knows sit and stay; and he's good on a leash. Good with my colleagues (canines) and friendly to humans, he'd be proud to accompany someone on a stroll around the block.

We found Rudolph currently being cared for by the Miami Valley Labrador Retriever Rescue. The Miami Valley Labrador Retriever Rescue is a small group of volunteers from the Miami Valley Labrador Retriever Club (an AKC licensed specialty club in southwestern Ohio)and other caring community members. They are funded solely from adoption fees and donations.

For more information about Blitzen, click here!

Meet Donner!

It's hard to say what mixed breed Donner is. He's so cute that it doesn't really matter though. Initially when meeting Donner, he's a little shy. A few minutes and dog treats later, he becomes your buddy.

He's a young adult and does well with other dogs, cats, and children. Donner is crate-trained. He is very smart and can figure a way out of many kinds of enclosures. Therefore, he needs to be a primarily indoor dog and be let out to potty under supervision or some kind of tie out. Donner does stick around once he's out, but seems to like the challenge of getting away.

Donner is currently being cared for by Four Paws Rescue in Millville, Utah. They started as one woman's dream in 1995 and was crystallized in 2000 through obtaining a non-profit 501c3 status. They have a solar powered shelter on 11 acres in Cache Valley.

The shelter has facilities for the housing and care of dogs. They provide food, shelter, and medical to the homeless dogs and work to find permanent, loving homes for them. In an effort to help control the pet population, each pet is spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

A little about the Shetland Islands and the Sheltland Sheepdog!

Mum has always dreamed of traveling. Not for work, but for fun! She's had enough of traveling for work! She showed me this book today - the Globetrotter's LogBook®. Now I want to be a globetrotter!

I'd absolutely love to travel to where my ancestor's came from - The Shetland Islands.

The Shetland Sheepdog originates from the Shetland Islands that lie northwest of the British Isles, between Scotland and Norway, approximately 50 miles north of Scotland and a bit south of the Arctic Circle. As can well be imagined, the climate is harsh and the terrain, rugged.

But the hiking I bet would be fantastic! Walking the rugged coast, taking in the sea air. Just sounds like a little bit of a dream. Unlike many Shelties we know, I just love the wet, cool air.

Then using the handbook we could check out much more of Europe with it's maps, site web addresses, accommodations listings and much more!

I'm in Mum, when do we leave?

Meet Comet!

Comet, a black labrador retriever mix, is a sweet, playful girl who craves attention.

We found Comet currently being cared for by the Forever Friends Animal Sanctuary in Buchanan, Tennessee. Forever Friends Animal Sanctuary is a “no-kill” shelter for companion animals. Marion, Indiana shelter full! Can you help?

This is Hazel one of the hundreds of pups in Marion, Indiana needing a home. She's currently at the Grant County Animal Shelter which is overwhelmed with pups right now due to confiscation from a hoarding situation. And many are in danger of being euthanized. Can you help?

From WANE-TV in Fort Wayne comes news that....

The Grant County Animal Shelter, in Marion, is overwhelmed with pets this winter. They're asking for the publics help to find suitable homes. The shelter has had busy months before, but rarely like this. Animal control recently took seventy-five neglected animals from residences in the area. Thirty-one came from one house alone; some were near starvation.

That's left the humane society scrambling to find owners.

"We are way past capacity right now," said shelter director Kim May. "In general, I think its because people don't understand how one animal coming in impacts the shelter, because we're always full."

The shelter has room for about 100 dogs. Right now they're up to 150. If some of those animals don't find a home soon, they could be put down.

"We try and be a low-kill shelter, but sometimes we're forced to do things we prefer not to do", May said.

Jeff and Darlene Hauser made a trip today from Indianapolis when they heard of the problem. They hope to take in a few adult dogs until a permanent home can be found.
"We're just trying to help out, and give some socialization skills to some of the dogs", Hauser said.

May says many of the animals have been nursed back to health. She hopes anyone looking for a canine companion will make the trip to Marion.

"From Fort Wayne, we have mad multiple people that have adopted from us in the past", May said. "We would love to have foster owners up there as well, but adoption is the best. It's what we're looking for!" she said.

Anyone interested in finding a home for some of those pets can contact the Marion-Grant County Humane Society at 765-664-1232 or visit their website for more information.

Meet Dancer!

Dancer, the Greyhound, is looking for a partner to practice her moves with! She's eager to demonstrate that she has good leash manners and will come when called. Dancer has a pleasant, happy attitude and is friendly to everyone she meets. This girl is almost 3 and raced at a weight of 65lbs. She has not been introduced to cats, she will meet them soon!

We found Dancer currently being cared for by a foster family through the Greyhound Pets of America in Wisconsin. Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) is a nationwide non-profit, volunteer-supported organization dedicated to the placement of ex-racing Greyhounds in ideal home situations. GPA Wisconsin's Milwaukee adoption operation primarily services the greater Milwaukee metro area, as well as eastern portions of Wisconsin, and Northern Illinois. GPA Wisconsin's Madison adoption operation primarily services the greater Dane County area, as well as central and western Wisconsin. They are a Greyhound-placement organization that accepts Greyhounds primarily from Wisconsin and Iowa Greyhound racetracks, and local shelters. Through a network of local veterinarians, our organization provides full examinations, spaying, neutering, dental care and other needed medical procedures prior to adoption.

GPA Wisconsin's Milwaukee and Madison adoption operations rely heavily upon Greyhound-savvy families to act as temporary "foster homes" for ex-racers to make the transition to home life while awaiting adoption. Fostering is a very rewarding activity, where the foster family helps a Greyhound explore a home (most have never seen stairs, patio doors and other interesting things), recuperate from spay or neuter surgery, learn good manners, and best of all, learn that the transition to becoming a pet is journey filled with love.

Meet Pepper!

She is an excellent companion in car rides and loves to play ball or frisbee. She'll make sure you get the toy back! Pepper is calm at home and does not touch your things but she does need good time out and play time. Pepper does not beg for food, but of course she likes to have a share of your food after you are done eating, and she
does not jump on sofas.

She is good with dogs, kids and ladies she meets in the neighborhood but may need a little time to warm up to men. Pepper is a really nice companion if you can provide her with the outdoor/playtime needed. She may turn out to be good in agility if you are into that great sport!

We'll be posting tomorrow or Monday and catch up on the pups - thanks for understanding!

This is Sushi, a female Maltese, Chihuahua [Mix] that weighs about 5 pounds. She's approximately 3 years old, spayed, current on shots, heartworm negative and microchipped.

Sushi is good with other dogs and cats. She seems very sweet around children, but under certain fearful conditions, she may nip, so she should be placed in a home with small children. She was rescued from a county shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized. When she came into the shelter, I was nursing a puppy.

She has never really been a pet before and gets very scared when I meet someone new. I hide and shake. I need an owner that is very understanding and patient. It's going to take me a little while to totally come out of my shell. I am not housebroken yet, but I'm working on it.

Sushi is currently being cared for by the Chihuahua/Small Dog Rescue of Central Florida. They are a Chihuahua/Small Dog Rescue staffed by a small group of dedicated, unpaid volunteers. They receive no commercial or government funding.
